Toledo 1.9 tdi SE

Hi all,

Im 17 and was at first planning on getting a Leon 1.4 s. But after peoples opinions decided against this. I'm now hopefully going to get either a Leon 1.9tdi 110 or a Toledo 1.9tdi 110.

What's peoples opinions on the Toldeo tdi 110? One thing i've seen is on the AMD site, the re-map isnt as effiective as the map for the Leon. But surely the same map can be applied as the one on the Leon 110 which gains 35bhp and is less expensive? The reason being one of the first things i do once i get the car is get a re-map done :D

Other than that, Toledo good solid cars? Definately not a usual first car, but im loving the idea of one. Quite a low insurance group aswell (6) which i can cope with.

Any opinions appreciated.

Cheers

P.S I'm on about a MK 2 Toledo ;)

Toledo is really just a leon with a boot. I'm no expert on the diesels as I have the V5 but I believe it is a very good engine with lots of punchy torque, especially after a remap.

Both Tollys and Leons suffer from the same common problems which are mainly water leaks into footwells, maf failure, coilpacks, temp sensors and lambda sensors failing.
Some electrical niggles too so just have a good read on this site to have your checklist handy when you go to look at your car. Some of these engine problems will not relate to the diesel but it may have it's own unique ones so be sure to check.

Also make sure you know how much the remap will affect your insurance, at such a young age as you are it may be an issue?

To sum up, my Tolly is now 8 years old with 55K on the clock and it still drives like new.
Still puts a smile on my face and they can actually be tarted up quite smart with a few mods. Never had any of the above problems, only the coilpacks and that's after 2 years ownership.

Hope this info helps some and good luck with your choice! :)

Thanks very much for the reply.

I think i'll say ill look out for both a Leon and a Toldeo and see hich one comes up first that seems a goodun.

I think its the best idea to fork out a little bit more on a 1.9tdi (on actually buying the car and insuring it) as being an utter petrol head....dont want to be driving round in a silly little car lol. If i can afford it...then why not! lol

Cheers

The Mk.2 Toledo is a fine car, and is the ancestor of the Leon Mk.1 - the hatchback was derived from it. The Toledo is lighter and stiffer, a better shell - the Toledo shell was the one used for the race cars.

The only downside is the boot opening is irritatingly small.

The engines are identical in the Leon and Toledo, and should take exactly the same remaps.

Not much to add to the above - I've got a 2001 Toledo TDI 110 on 76k miles and it's running sweetly and not had any problems other than the usualwear and tear.

One other thing to check is the Air Con, the clutches are prone to coming off as mine has done, SEAT quoted £900 to fix so surprisingly not bothered!

I'd definatley got for a Toledo over a Leon, not sure why, it's just a bit different!

Not driven a re-maped one but the figures look decent, I considered getting one and reading around on here it seems that an "Upsolute" map is the best to go for on these engines, not quite as big an increase as some quote but they have years of experiance with these engines so chances are it will be more reliable.
The standard engine isn't at all bad once you learn how to use it best, vary rarely feel the need for much more power if I'm driving sensibly.

Had a toledo 110bhp tdi.

remapped by p-torque to 143bhp and 256lbs/ft. Was still going strong at 173,000 miles!

Thats a very interesting choice of car for a first car. Though a nice choice i think, certainly different, and better, than what your mates will be driving no doubt!

The 1.9TDis seem very hardy, one reason why i want one.

i was 17 when i brought my tolly... now 18 still like it... gt the pi55 took out of me when it was standard, bt now... hahaha...
if i could go bk now id try and find a 130hp model because id rather have the 6 speed box and would be the pd engine... but theres a cost thing that comes into it... either way id do it all again

Why is a PD better than a non PD?

Ive been looking at Boras before Toledos and they come with all different 1.9s 90, 100, 110, 150, 130. Some PD some not, so why is PD better?

Ive found a nice Toledo for sale, but wont have the time to see it until Saturday, i hope its still there then!

What kind of MPG do you 1.9TDi 110 owners get? Im lead to believe around 50?

We have the V5 170 toledo and although we've had a few issues they were all solved relatively easily. We love our car and its as reliable as they come. We drive it from the highlands to the isle of Bute a few times a year and like all cars it love the chance to stretch its legs after all the small journeys we normally do. Solid car, no real bodywork issues- couple of scratches from a passing handbag I suspect but easy enuf to put right.
I cant comment on the TDI as ours is petrol and we get 25-30 mpg on town trips and 45+ mpg on long trips and thats purely cos neither of us hang around when driving it! Oh and just to put that in context, our old almera used to average 19 mpg!! We also use premium fuel (no tesco fuel!) so it costs more than a diesel wud but we dont mind.

Thats impressive economy from a V5!

Id love one but i really need a diesel for the amount of miles i do, it would cost me a fortune!

They all seem very reliable :D

PD are newer more technically advanced engines (don't ask me to go into details though)
In the toledo the 110BHP model is non PD, and 130/150BHP were PD. The Bora/golf also had other PD versions which didn't come in the toledo.

As for mpg my trip computer is saying 52mpg average since I last reset it a month ago, that's a pretty much 50/50 mix of short in town trips and long motorway journeys.

lol thanks! We once got 60 mpg out of it but in fairness that was with the car going down a very big hill pmpl!!
If we are in stop start traffic then the mpg goes out the window completely!
How much is diesel ur way? In the highlands theres really not much difference between regular and diesel. The premium is more but worth every penny for engine performance.

diesel is 105.9p at my local shell, which is the cheapest around.

Hopefully going to see a Toledo 1.9TDi tomorrow, i just hope its as good as it sounds in the advert.

Anything which i should look out for? I know about leaks, but why do they leak?

Hope im doing the right thing in getting a Toledo. Recently ive bought a few cars, found ive not got on with them and wanted something else pretty quickly. Im just hoping a Toledo will fit my needs and ill really like it, as i plan on keeping my next car for atleast a few years, to see me through my uni course.

Ive not been happy with a car since i had my Arosa TDi, so im hoping with this being a Seat ill enjoy it .....

To go back on topic: while i was getting some insurance quotes earlier in the year, when i was thinking about a Toledo/Leon before, i actually found Toledos were cheaper to insure than the same model Leon. Dont know why that should be, but they worked out cheaper for me. They also seem cheaper to buy too. Another reason i really like them is the rarety, i loved this aspect of my Arosa too. The fact you can go out and not see another car the same as what your driving. My flipping 206, i tell you, every other car on the road is a 206! Im sick of it! Im also tired of being cramped, being jittered around on the smoothest of roads, the noise, the build, the notchy gearbox, .... It did seem like a good idea to buy this at the time (from my sister actually - we swapped cars, i think she got a better deal!) though i dont think ive even had it 2 months yet and im really needing a change. - Hope a Toledo is the car for me :D

Chris.

At the end of the day you can have every single member here tell you that its brilliant, but the only way to find out is to drive it :)

I have a 1.9 TDI SE, (not quite sure what comes with the "SE" that doesnt normally!) but I love it, suffered from sticky vains in the first week but dealer fixed that no problemo! Any problems you have, and if your brave enough, can probably be fixed yourself by searching and posting on the forums!

Good luck!

i can vouch for the 110tdi toledo, id pick one over an equivilent leon any day.

my last car was a 110 which had 43k on when i got it, sold it after about 16months with 59k never had any massive problems with it.

only issues i had was blowing intercooler pipes off lol admittedly first one came off cos lad who did my timing belt replaced the spring clip with a jubilee and didnt tighten it, 2nd time was a lower pipe which just blew off, but other than that it was utterly reliable.

50mpg is easily achievable from them on a daily basis, i even had over 60 on a few occasions, which is ideal when ur doin a lot of miles. even if you thrash it you'll struggle to get less than low 40s, which is a lot better than can be said of my current 150

if you can try and get an SE rather than an S because then you get alloys, cruise control, climate control, 6cd changer, centre armrest and even a rear parcel shelf blind! and it shouldnt cost that much more to insure

heres a pic of my old 110, proof that they can look cool [B)]

I love my Toledo - I've had a few cars, but mine has caused me no problems at all.

I certainly don't think you would get as much for your money with any other VAG equivalent.

Mine's going up for sale (just got a new job with company car, so no point keeping it) - I'm gonna miss it :(

It will be posted in the sale section tonight (once I get ten posts!)

Chris.

Well i did go and see the car i mentioned above. Though i didnt buy it.

It was a very tidy car, with a good history, but the interior smelt badly of smoke (i dont smoke), there was a large cig burn in the passenger seat too. But apart from that it was virtually un marked. I had a test drive and found it was ok, i felt it was a bit expensive at the price it was advertised and the seller wouldnt budge a £ and the cambelt needed doing too. So i left it and didnt look at any more Toledos, as i found some things i didnt like. The boot is big but it looks very hard to get anything in and out, very small opening which would be a bit useless for me. Also i didnt like the seats, they felt uncomfortable - this was the basic S spec but seemed to have quite a sporty interior, alloys etc.

So i went on to buy a different car, which has been nothing but problems, i really dont like it and ive no idea what to do with it. I had 4 car changes last year and still dont have a car i like

My 2001 Toledo 1.9TDI 110 is approaching 200k miles and still going strong.
Had a few minor things to change over the years, but nothing out of the ordinary. Great value for money and very reliable. Good performance and mpg.

Things (faults) I changed:
MAF failed (replaced myself for €80 and 5 mins work)
Bonnet lock replaced after it failed (€25) Probably because I open it a lot to check oil/water etc.
Replaced warped front brake discs recently.

The boot opening is a bit tight though.
