Towbar coding conversion from ODIS to OBDeleven.

Hi everyone,

I'm in the process of fitting the dedicated wiring loom to my Leon Mk3 FR and need some help with the programming side of it. I have already tried to do the coding and connect the extra module into the cars can-bus system but it came up with all sorts of errors when I powered the car back up so disconnected the additional wiring loom from the car. With the instructions for the wiring loom it has a page for doing the program changes using ODIS, I'm using OBDeleven so the layout/descriptions are different. I'm just wondering if anyone has cross referenced these options and successfully used OBDeleven to enable the towbar wiring. I've added a copy of the text in the manual below if someone could help I would be most grateful.

Coding with ODIS - Manually OFFLINE
Please note:
The procedure described below to configure and enable trailer mode settings, is based on a comprehensive number of control units that may be installed in the vehicle. Please check using your diagnostic equipment, what control units are actually installed.

NOTE! After connecting to ODIS, please ensure the "Trailer Function 69" controller has been enabled first

The following may be necessary in the further course of work:

Coding ECE_09 (Electronic Central Electrics):
Diagnosis
Networking plan
Controller self-diagnosis
Encode
Trailer connection device Installed
or: hitch_ecu Installed

Coding ZKS_46 (Central module convenience system):
Trailer monitoring put on active
Trailer control unit Installed

Encoding SWA_3C (Lane Change Assist)
ECU for draw bar With ECU for draw bar

Encoding SCH_17 (Dash panel insert)
Trailer Yes

Encoding RFK_6C (reverse camera system)
Equipment_ahk Installed

Encoding STF_74 (chassis control system)
Trailer Installed

Encoding EPH_76 (PDC controller)
Trailer Trailer device can be removed manually

Encoding DIS_13 (controller distance control)
Control module for
towing sens Installed

Encoding FFF_A5 (front sensor system controller)
AAG Coded

Encoding HDE_6D (boot lid electronics controller)
Trailer Installed

Sorry this isn't much help to your actual question, but can I ask what tow bar you fitted? and is yours an SC/5dr or ST? Do you have any pictures of the bumper cut? thanks

I've not actually fitted the physical towbar to my car yet as I knew the wiring side could be more problematic and it has been. I've got the westfalia detachable towbar to fit and will be doing the bumper cut. Mines also the 5dr model, the ST seem to hide the bumper cut much better than the 5dr. Once I've got the wiring sorted I will then fit the towbar and put it on my insurance :rolleyes:

I presume this is a facelift car (as it impacts the coding) in control unit 09

Sorry no, my car is a MY14 2.0 TDI 184 FR 5dr if that makes any difference.

The ODIS coding I've got is applicable to the following cars apparently;

SEAT
Leon 3-Door 06/13 ->
Leon 5-Door 11/12 ->
Leon ST 11/13 ->
Leon X-Perience 10/14 ->
Ateca 06/16 ->

thanks, it just that VAG turned off Long Coding on Control unit 09 in late 2016 but you car is before that so its fine.
I have a look through and see if I can see anything

Forgive me for asking, but why do you want to go to all the trouble of trying to install and code the dedicated wiring loom? from what I have read on here from people that have fitted towbars, you really don't need it, (all it does from memory is automatically turn off the rear parking sensors)

Sorry but I have not seen any coding for this but I had a quick look through the long coding and I can see the following switches for Trailers (unless stated all coding is using Long Coding set to 1

Control Unit 01, Long Coding, Byte 05 Bit = Bit 4 - Trailer - Installed / Not Installed
Control Unit 09, Long Coding, Byte 01 Bit 1 - Trailer hitc control module
Control Unit 13, Long Coding, Byte 02 Bit 3 - Trailer recognition control module - Installed, Not Installed,
Control Unit 17, Long Coding (0) Trailer positioning assistant options options are No, Yes
Control Unit 76, Long Coding (0) Trailer options are without trailer hitch, Trailer hitch (manually removable), Pivoting trailer hitch
Control Unit A5, Long Coding (0) or Byte 16 trailer_control_module options are not installed, installed, reserved

Under Adaptations:

Control Unit 03 - Vehicle and trailer stabilization:
Control Unit 5F - Under Vehicle function list CAN: you have Trailer, Trailer_msg_bus
Control Unit 19 - Trailer Function

Hope that helps if you want to code.

Its a much neater install than fitting a smart relay and tapping into wires from both sides of the car, I've done about 5 installs using them on various vehicles and its never as neat as I would like. For my nice new (to me) car I wanted to have it done properly plus with auto turning off parking sensors or changing the stability control setting if it does so would be nice. Thought the programming for it would be well documented but its obviously not haha.

I couldn't find anything anywhere either but what you have found looks like the stuff I needed to know about and the bytes and bits I need to adjust. Thank you so much for your help, hopefully this will be all I need to be error free on the coding side now :D

The car will still function but coding will link in with traction control, start stop and any assistance systems.

Finally had some time to get back on to doing the programming for my car towbar electrics. Now all working ok with no errors. After reconnecting the battery I had all the same errors as last time to do with the ESP, ABS, Parking assistance, Tyre pressure monitoring and data communication errors. Went through all the coding and adaptions as listed above and changed them over but a lot of the errors still exist. After changing all the wiring and programming back the first time, I had the same issue before taking it for a drive and the faults cleared. The same as last time I took it for a drive and the fault lights turned off. Got back and did a clearing of faults but still had a few static faults on the system. Had to undo the change in the control unit 17 and that fault cleared up. No more faults on the car but yet to test the socket itself, as need to do the bumper cut whenever I get some time again. Didn't get any screen shots or pictures as pressed for time, the wiring changes are in the manual and was just enabling the program settings in OBDeleven. Thanks again theoldboy for your help. If anyone else wants any pointers I'm happy to help where I can.

Arron glad could help with some pointers, just for the record is your car pre or post facelift.

I am guessing its pre facelift because you could make the changes in long coding on control unit 09 which you cant do on post facelift but there will be some other switch in the Adaptations for this purpose.

Yes its definitely a pre facelift model being a MY14.

Thanks, for those who are trying this please note it will be slightly different for Facelift cars.

So you happen to know what the adaptation should be for a post facelift Leon. I've looked through and can't immediately spot the correct one with vcds

I know this thread is old but for anybody reading in future;

Buying the genuine towbar kit includes an SVM code meaning that businesses such as ourselves can automatically code the car to accept the towbar within minutes. It also adjusts the build data stored within the VWAG mothership which can save headaches if the car ever goes into a main dealer and they update/SVM any modules.

Hi, given that this can be coded in minutes, what do you think a reasonable charge would be for getting this coded? I've been quoted £90 inc VAT but was thinking that's a bit steep. FYI, I'm based near Bolton.
