Tyres Cracking already

    Hi All,

    We have had the ibiza for just over a year now and when cleaning it i noticed that the tyres have started cracking already.

    Tyres are just over a year old and make on the second week of 2019, the dealership have said that these tyres tend to do this due to the type of rubber.

    Anyone else got this issue?

    I’ve seen worse and sure it is of more concern if they are cracking on the sidewalls, what did the garage recommend?, at a little over a year old I would not be happy, what brand are they?

    They are not the worst as you say but slightly concerning for just over a year. The Dealership said they are fine its because the rubber has dried out, but ive only seen this on tyres 3 or more years old.

    They are the tyres that came with the car and are Bridgestone from factory on the 18 inch alloys

    Assuming you park it outside, and the tyres 'get sun?'

    It is always outside as mines in the garage, but our drive is covered from the sun.

    They wont do anything about it but just seems a bit off to me

    A good reason to avoid Bridgestone car tyres, that should not be happening with tyres manufactured in 2019 already. Maybe talk to Bridgestone's UK sales team, they should sort this out to avoid bad stories going around.

    Got the same year half old 18 inch but the standard fit pirrelli cinteratu

    Tyres are the car components that suffer the most I have my Seat since June of 2018 the car has 16000km and no cracking, you can avoid it by applying a product that does not let the rubber dry out, when I wash the car I apply this product with a sponge, you can apply it once a month or every 2 months.

    That is more a dressing than a functional protector from UV light, plus the OP's tyres were cracking on the running areas, ie the treads or the base of the treads.

    The rubber absorbs the product and protects the area seen with cracks in the photo, what i can say is that since i started putting this kind of products my tires never cracked again.

    This is the long winded reply from Bridgestone


    Hi Adam, apologies again, after reviewing the images, I can say that the tyres condition is very minor and will not pose any detriment to safety or performance.
    The reason for the cracking can be contributed to a variety of factors such as:
    • The application of ‘Tyre Dressing’. - Used by dealer forecourts and carwash companies mainly to make the sidewalls/shoulders of the tyres look ‘more black’. These can be quite strong and some are even mildly corrosive if used consistently over time.
    • Poor pressure maintenance during the tyre’s life. This causes over flexing in the tyre casing eventually causing tyres to prematurely age. The tyres crazing in the images provided in the shoulder area typical wear characteristics and suggest that at some point in the tyres service life the tyres may have not been kept to the vehicles recommended tyre pressure setting for the loads carried.
    • Exposure to contaminates. - Petrol, anti-freeze, motor oil, tyre ‘dressing’ (used on the sidewalls to appear more “black”).
    • Regular, but short frequent trips in the vehicle (lack of use), where the tyres are heating up, then cooling down over a short period of time. (essentially preventing the aforementioned oils from percolating/migrating throughout the tyre fully). We add anti-aging oils into the rubber compound, however for these oils to be released the tyres need to get to an operating temperature. If the tyres are not used regularly then the releasing agents in the anti-aging oils are unable to percolate through the casing and ensure the tyre stays subtle.
    The upside to this phenomenon is that ‘crazing’ only affects the top cap layer of rubber, so is only cosmetic in nature. - This type of appearance does not have any effect on the tyres handling or performance, and based on the appearance in the image provided we would advise that these tyres are ok to continue running.

    There is another way of writing this:- "nothing to do with us or the way we manufacture tyres, as usual this is all down to how these tyres have been used - sorry no redress possible/needed from us!".

    Ah well, give Bridgestone a miss in the future - get a set of Michelins.

    No such problem with Michelin Primacy 4 tyres (not on a Seat). Car is parked outside (it gets couple of hours of the sun if not cloudy a day). Car is from 4th quarter 2018
