Hi all,

I have a 2004 Leon tdi 1.9 pd150. Currently the car is not starting and any suggestions or help will be massively appreciated. I will give you the full story below. I’ve written key Parts in capitals.

-When I bought the car it would take about 10 seconds of cranking to fire but would always fire.
-before we replaced the cambelt the car had been sat for a few weeks so battery was dead and we had to jump start it. We drove the car into our garage.
-replaced the cambelt as it was 3 years overdue. Also we fitted a new battery as we suspected the current one was very old.

(NEXT BIT IS VERY ODD)
-on first startup after we fitted the cambelt and battery the car didn’t fire and when we took the key OUT OF THE IGNITION the car CARRIED ON turning over/cranking but not firing and the car alarm was going off.

-we disconnected the battery and charged it up suspecting it was low as it had been sat for about 2 months as we did the cambelt when we had time over a few weeks.
-reconnected the charged battery and car fired after about 10 seconds like it had been before. The car ran smoothly with no issues.

-drove the car about 4 times after the cambelt change, all about 15/20minutes of driving at different speeds.

(DAY OF THE BREAKDOWN)
-started the car up and warmed it up for 10 mines before we left, drove it 1mile and the engine cutout, tried restarting it and it would turn over normally but wouldn’t fire.

-AA came out after an hour of waiting, they started the car on easystart but it would die straight away.
-he tried again with easystart but kept it revved (THE CAR STAYED RUNNING) he kept it revved for about 10 mins to warm the car up, the car was warm but AS SOON AS HE LET HIS FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR IT WOULD CUT OUT, it wouldn’t go to idle).
-his obd reader said RPM speed sensor fault.

-I then fitted new genuine crank sensor, cam sensor and a non genuine RPM gearbox speed sensor (but it was from a reputable online seller) but the car still wouldn’t start
-rechecked the cambelt to ensure it hadn’t loosened, it was still as tight as when we fitted it.
-we used a multimeter to measure if the glow plugs we’re getting power which they were (but was a very basic check, nothing in depth).

-the night we were taking it to the garage I put the key in the ignition but IT WOULDNT LET ME TURN MORE THAN ONE NOTCH (it didn’t turn the dashboard lights on etc) I tried multiple times for about 10 mins trying to get the key in to unlock the steering lock so we could tow the car. so as a random attempt I unlocked the car and stuck the key in and instantly turned the key in and turned it and it let me put the ignition on and try start the car. It has worked correctly ever since and not done that again.

TOOK IT TO VAG SPECIALISTS
-they said they checked the fuel pressures and fuel was getting to the top of engine.
-they said the sensors fitted were working correctly BUT THERE WAS A CAM SENSOR FAULT THAT THEY’D CLEAR AND WOULD COME BACK ON AS SOON AS THEY TRIED TO FIRE THE CAR. but they said the sensor was working correctly.
-they had tried to start it and the same thing happened to them where the car CARRIES ON TURNING OVER EVEN AFTER YOUVE TAKEN THE KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION.

They turned round and said they don’t know what’s wrong with it and don’t want to work on it anymore and left it on their forecourt court for 2 weeks without telling me they had given up on it.

any help would be massively appreciated as the wife is without a car.

My first thoughts are not with the running of the engine but with the engine cranking over at free will.
I'm wondering if there's an ignition switch or ignition relay problem here?

Just re read your post and have noticed you mentioned about the single notch on the ignition.
Get the switch swapped over and go from there as it sounds knackered and they only cost a few quid anyway.

Where are you as I've actually got a couple of spare switches?

Thank you, for your reply.

i was thinking down the same route. Is the starter powered directly from the ignition Or from the ECU?
