I too am going to drag this up from the past.
My friend has a Volvo S40, we fitted a halfords peice of crap induction kit for a laugh and the wast gate sound it makes is cool.
I assume it was a waste gate, it may be a recirc valve making a weird noise, but its not the standard "Pssshhh" of a DV/RDV. Its like a chirp, or a double or even triple "Tchss" almost, I am sure you all know this noise anyway. When I went to the roaling road in oxford, some1 with a MK3 had it then, and it sounded awesome.
Who were you, tell me your secrect!! :)

something else, you can hear a bit of "Chatter" in my friends totally standard gold GTi. Which has the same engine. So why is it bad for our turbos, if my two friends cars do it without messing around with the cars?
Thanks chaps.

hehe, perhaps you are correct. haha
no idea. I switched over some pipes as they were perishing.
Anyway when i drove to get the mrs later, it was making a fair amount of chatter, sounded cool, but i obviously know now this is very bad, so pulled over and it was a split in the hose coming off the top of the dump valve (the smallest one).
My question is, what does this particular tube do? What when this was unplugged did it chatter? does this open and close the valve or something? Im just trying to get an idea of what does what in relation to boost and VAC hoses.

thanks

Yes Rob, that was the noise, My car started doing it so pulled over straight away, and it was the little pipe coming off the top of the DV.
I had no idea that it was a bad thing untill reading it on here, im just glad I did read it, otherwise I wouldnt have known to pull over.
Pipe is replaced now.
Its kinda a shame though, coz i think it sounds kinda cool compared with standard "Pssh" lol

just reading this old post, my car makes some sort of chatter running the forge dumpvalve, ive had it checked and its 100% working fine and ive had it for nearly a year with no problems, would'nt mind it a bit louder haha

I ran my CT9 turbo on my Glanzav for a year without a DV and there was absolutely no shaft play - loads of compressor surge when lifting off (as there's nothing to dump the air to atmosphere)

It will damage the bearings eventually but in my case running 16psi on the turbo for a year like that never did anything! Maybe I was just lucky eh? 'll let you guys decide.

Hey all!
I'm new to owning a Cupra and was also interested in the chatter noise untill reading all these posts, just wanted to say thanks for potentially saving my turbo!
have learned a lot.
Cheers Guys

there is no such thing as wastegate chatter. Wastegates are either open or closed.

The chattering your talking about is called compressor surge or compressor/turbo stall.

This happens when boost is produced when the accelerator pedal is pressed, when you lift off the throttle the intake throttle body closes the flap. Usually at this point the excess boost is either vented to atmos via a BOV or its recirced back into the system before the turbo. When your hearing the "chattering noise its air being forced back through the turbine blades the wrong way causing it to slow (stall).

this can put strain on the turbine itself and the shaft and isn't generally recommended if you want a decent lifespan from the turbines.

Alot of jap cars make this noise (my previous MR2 turbo included), usually its down to the type of BOV used many of them are sequential 2 stage ones that under medium to full boost if will make this chattering noise.

There is no reason you cant go out and fit a HKS SSQV or Apexi BOV to any car and get the same results.

a lot of it depends on the turbo as well i think. 90% of Japanese import turbo cars will come with ceramic turbos so there is a lot of potential worry about putting excess stress on them.

like antilag, chuffing awesome to hear and look at, not so great for the turbo!

the way i look at it is i want the modifications i do to the car to have the largest but safest possible performance gains.

Removing an item that serves a purpose like a BOV to force the car to make this noise in my books isn't a great idea. ITs there for a reason.

unless your a rally team of course and can change the turbo after each stage lol

a lot of jap cars run no blow off at all. if you look over at drifting forums, 200sx forums etc they think that turbo chatter being bad is nothing more than a myth.
