Thanks for reply SEAT RULE, I have been told that 54431015703, a number on the aluminium casting part of the turbo, not on the ID plate is a casting reference number. Many turbos with different ID plate numbers use this casting. My recon turbo has not got an ID plate.
Right ok it appears that some companies remove the identification plate when they overhaul a turbo, but not all only some.
This is what I've found from a company called
Midland Turbo, who are UK based.
This is what it says on their website for the Borg Warner Turbo's.
Borg Warner part numbers are usually located on the compressor housing (or in some instances on the underside near where the oil/drain pipes go) on a small plate.
They also have the biggest range of part numbers and variations used so it can be a little more difficult.
The number cast into the turbo housing should also be one of the numbers on the identification plate, as well as the NC number which only appears on the identification plate.
Also states on the website that the batch/serial number starting 543 or 544 is 11 digits long and the 3 middle digits/numbers can be for example 988 which can be interchanged with 970 and might be required when searching the
store.
So going by your numbers starting 543 and 544 the replacement turbo you've been given/purchased should fit your vehicle.
Basically the serial numbers should go up in sequence so if your old turbo number is 54399880019 and your replacement is number 54431015073 this means it's a more recent turbo according to the batch/serial numbers from your first post.
- Below is an example of the Borg Warner identification plate, according to Midland Turbo's.

My advice is to contact another turbo specialist company that overhaul these, and get a second opinion if you're in any doubt.
Hope this helps
