Wiper behaviour

Im sure its nothing to be concerned about but im a bit mystified as to the behaviour of the wipers on my Leon.

Now i know from my current place of work that VAG cars have a "service position" for wipers. what im curious about is why the wipers seem to move into another position by themselves when you start the car and when you turn it off.

Its almost like its a "ready" position. I suppose I'm wondering why bother do that in the first place? most wipers just sweep from one set position to the other

I think it's to even out the wear on the both sides of the sweeping edge of the blades where they make contact with the windscreen, so they don't always use the same side of the blade at the beginning of the first sweep across the screen.

Presumably this also prolongs the life and efficiency of the blades.

interesting, though im still a bit confused as to how the wipers moving a few inches from the very bottom of the screen up a bit during start-up would do that.

I was also interested why it does it, but never got around to finding out why. When I saw the thread I got interested again and checked it out - basically when you turn off the car the wipers go in "rest" mode, the arms are adjusted to a certain position to lower the pressure on the wiper itself (the rubber blade). This is done to extend the life of the wipers.

When you turn off the car they, the wipers, go into a mode that rest onto the windscreen, read the manual that came with your car? They also go into a park mode so that you can change the blades and also so that when they are covered in ice and snow they do not strip the thread holding the arm on.
