Telford ay it...
After changing the coil, leads and coolant temp sensor my car has started playing up again.....but worse than before

It starts then dies off, like its flooding. Try to start after its died and it wont, then try again and it kicks into life then dies again. I replaced the coolant temp sensor and it seemed to cure it. Maybe the temp sensor is dodgy

Anyone any ideas????

As suggested try the air temp sensor!

I had similar problems and a VAG.com check showed a speradic fault (open circuit) with the air temp sensor and the same with the MAF. I changed both and its been fine!

Might have something to do with damp/water ingress so check all is dry and connected!

cheers guys

Theres no seperate air temp sensor as mine is the 2E 8v gti with bosch injection, just got the big lump of a MAF. Connector is a tad loose. The symptoms seem to point to the coolant temp sensor again  Mite try my old one when i get home later, see if it emproves slightly.

By the way it did start in the end after abit of effort, hope it starts to get me home :(

I know how you feel!!

Daft question but have you ran VAG.com or such like?

Does WD really work! as I've never been convinced and it makes it hard to distinguish water from oil and attracts crap!

Used wd40 alot in my mk4 escort days, worked well on that :) Gets rid of moisture etc.

Not got access to vag com mate, would be ideal if i could get it on it.

thats your problem its a 96 :D... maybe its the damp getting into the igniton circuit, making the issue sporadic?

we dont use WD40 at work as it does attract ****, we have other sprays from WURTH.. 2040 lubricant, and a silicone spray.... its good ****:funk:

i havent actually, after alot of starting attempts the stench of fuel is rather strong through the inlet, so assumed the injectors were pumping fuel

the thought of faulty wiring in the ignition system scares me a little, but 3 months ago it was starting fine eventually under regular use.
