Ive done mine and it were very simple, if your half decent with a set of spanners you'll be fine, but if your not id recommend you get a haynes manual to help you along
well im assuming the APG engine is similar to the AEX engine! worst thing i found was getting the crank pulley bolts out, someone had managed to round off 3 of the 4 6mm allen bolts so i had to hammer a socket onto them but that was it haynes manual explains it, abit to detailed though (i only wanted the timing marks)
My car had a cambelt change at 49k in 2003, its now on 86k - so although under mileage age should be enough to get it done again for peace of mind right?
Do I need to get the waterpump done at the same time? It's a MK2 16v cupra

I would get the belt done, they deteriorate with age. Water pumps not too much of a problem on these as is not driven by the cambelt so I wouldn't unless you have the cash to throw away.
